CABLEGRAMS.
[From our own Correspondents]. Lottdon, Nov. 9. At the annual banquet given by the Lord Mayor to-day, the Hon. W. E. Gladstone made a speech in which he referred at length to the position of affairs in Ireland. He stated that the Irish were fully realising the benefits sought to be provided by the Land Act, and that the situation in Ireland had materially improved. One of the earliest measures next Session would be a Bill providing for reform of procedure of Parliament. Such reform was urgently necessary, and he asked the assistance of all political parties in bringing the same into effect. Earl Granville stated that a cordial agreement continued between England and France in regard to Egypt. Alluding to the Anglo-French treaty, he said Government attached no magnified importance to the treaty, although politically such would be valuable. His Lordship concluded by stating emphatically that it was impossible for England to conclude a treaty with France of a retrograde character. New York, November 9. The elections which have just taken place for New York State, resulted in a return of Democrats to the House of Representatives. Sydney, November 11. In the Assembly, last night, in the debate on the Milbum Creek Mine enquiry, Sir Henry Parkes moved that Mr. Garrett, member for Cambden, was unworthy of confidence, in consequence of his action in connection with the award to the company. Mr. Garrett made an eloquent speech in defence, and the motion was rejected by 40 to 38. Melbourne, Nov. 10. In the Supreme Court to-day, the rule calling upon Commodore Wilson to show cause why he should not be committed for contempt of Court for ordering the re-arrest of bandsman Yates, was discharged. A dispute has arisen between Pritchard and Prince regarding the ownership of the horses Somnus, Sir Modred, Idalium, and Hilarious. They have been forcibly seized by Pritchard, and legal proceedings for their recovery are threatened by Prince.
