Mr. J. Somervell has been returned as a member of the Borough Council, vice Mr. F. J. Piesse, resigned. Nominations of candidates for the office of Mayor for the next year, will be received on Monday next, the 14th instant, by the Returning Officer. A transit of the planet across the sun’s disc takes place to-day, observable throughout New Zealand (if the weather is fine), commencing about 10 a.m., and ending about 3 p.m. A requisition to Mr. C. D. Bennett—-of the firm of Pitt and Bennett —to allow himself to be put in nomination for the Mayoralty for the ensuing 12 months, with that gentleman’s reply, appears in this morning’s issue. A Committee meeting for the furtherance of the Hospital fete on St. Andrew’s Day, was held on Saturday night last, with Captain Chrisp in the chair, when the locale of the Whataupoko block was decided on, on which to hold the sports. A programme was arranged, and officers appointed to carry the same out. Our readers will notice that the Bazaar and Concert in aid of the funds of the Presbyterian Church, will be held on Wednesday next, at Makaraka. A choice variety of articles, both ornamental and useful, will be offered for sale. There will be refreshment stalls, at which prices will be moderate, and a concert in the evening, when old favorites and new friends will assist. Indeed everything is being done to make the affair a grand success.

An advertisement appears in another column this morning, from Messrs H. Matson & Co., Auctioneers at Christchurch, intimating that on Friday next, the 11th, and Monday next the 14th instant, they will submit to auction 120 head of the choicest pedigree shorthorns in the Colonies, consisting of bulls, cows, and heifers ; also pure Clydesdale horses all ages; pure bred Leicester Rams ; pigs, milking cows, &c. The auctioneers affirm that the above animals are unsurpassed for beauty and excellence by any in the world.
