Poverty Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Show.

The annual show of the above Society was held yesterday, at th’e Society’s ground, Patutahi, and if not a brilliant success Was at least a convincing proof that great strides had been made during the past twelve months towards the improvement of stock. There were many who complained of the out-of-the-way position of the grounds, and argued that it would have been much betypr to have had the Show held at Makaraka. However, the weather was beautifully fine, and the somewhat extended ride or drive wa* most enjoyable. Of the thoroughbred and draught stock exhibited we have so frequently spoken that recapitulation is unnecessary. Suffice it to say that for breeding and syni' metry Poverty Bay can safely hold it* own against any district of its size in New The cattle exhibited gave proof that breeders had been attentive, and had not neglected to produce really good stock. Of the sheep we must speak in terms of the highest praise, and certainly must compliment Mr. J, E. Espieon the success he achieved not only with his own exhibits, but further with the sheep bred by him and sold to others. In several instances Mr. Espie’s sheep took preference over some of those bred by Mr. J. B. Sutton of Southland, one of the noted breeders of the South Island. We regret that, owing to the not very perfect arrangements, our report is necessarily an incomplete .one. The secretary was most obliging, but perhaps a little too much so, as his records of the awards appeared to be common property, and were handed about from one to another in a most confiding manner. Some of these records have not yet met our reporter’s eye, and consequently the list of the prizes is not what we should have liked it to be. The following, however, is as full a list of the prizes as it was possible to obtain :— Horses—not Draught. Ist Class—Best Entire, any age, thoroughbred. Mr. A.
