— 4 r [ lost horrible incident which occurred in Philadelphia is related in the New Zealand Tablet of September 17:-Theodore Kritz., living in a miserable back tenement, went to his work as usual and about 10 o’clock his wife went out to gather a basket of coal, leaving her infant lying on the bed up stairs. Shortly afterwards the neighbors hearing the baby cry tried the door, but found it securely locked. On the return of the woman she was told of her infant’s cries, and rushed up to the room. A moment afterwards the neighbours were horrified at her shrieks, and hastening to the room found her wildly pacing the floor, clipping the mutilated and bleeding infant to her breast. The child was then almost at tfoe death-struggle, and died within the hour. The wretched mother, when able to give any information, stated that on intering the room she saw a huge rat leap from the bed and make its escape through the chimney place, brom the state of the poor little infant, it is probable that more than one of the creatures hue assisted at the horrible feast.
