The good folk of Wellington may be said for once to have acted in a truly representative capacity, and that once was on the Governor’s return from Wellington. No one “ turned out ” to meet His Excellency ; there were “ none so poor as do him reverence,” and no one seemed to care whether he came or went. This is what the -V. Z. Times says of the matter : —The dissembarkation of His Excellency the Governor, Sir Arthur Gordon, took place early yesterday morning in a most unostentatious manner. At 9 o’clock His Excellency, accompanied by Miss Hamilton Gordon, and attended by Captail} Knolly’s A.D.C., left H.M.S. Emerald in the ship’s pinnace, and landed at the Breastwork near the Lion Foundry, where the vice-regal party was met by Mr. Murray, Private Secretary to ■ His Excellency, and another gentleman. The Governor and suite proceeded to Government House on foot. The yards of the Emerald were manned, and a salute of 19 guns was fired as the representative of Her Majesty left the side of the man-of-war. Beyond the etiquette demanded by the Service, the proceedings were quite informal, and attracted but few spectators. His Excellency cordially returned the salutations of the few persons whom he encountered on landing and during his walk to his official residence.
