In this issue will be found Mr. M. J. Gannon’s announcement of his intention to contest the representation of the East Coast Electorate in the coming parliament. Mr. Gannon confines his address almost exclusively to the Native land question, and certainly scores a point so far over his compeers, by making the great burning question of the day, the one on which he hangs the chiefest of his hopes. Truly there is no question that affects the prosperity of this electorate to such a degree as that appertaining to its landed interests —and, if originality of thought has anything to do with a success, Mr. Gannon may claim a fair measure of public attention. While remarking on Mr. Gannon’s utterances, we think it an ill-advised step to make the bald declaration that he is “ opposed to the Waste Lands of “ the Crown being administered by “ Boards located either in Auckland “or Hawke’s Bay,” without going a step further and stating what he proposes in their place. Public men should never leave anything to be inferred. However, we doubt not but Mr. Gannon will give good reason for omitting this from his written address, when he explains before a public meeting. In the meantime we rigidly adhere to our practice of letting all the candidates speak before making full remark on their fitness to fill the position they aspire to.
