The following is a statement showing the amount of Customs duties collected at the port of Poverty Bay, for the month ending 30th September, 1881 : —
The Sharemarket. Friday, 6 p.m. Messrs. Ratcliffe and Piesse report as follow : —The operations of the market in oil shares have been of a very inactive nature during the past fortnight. At the commencement of last week several parcels of “ Southern Cn saes” changed hands at 3s. 6d., 6th call paid, but it must be stated that that quotat on was not then the riding price, as the transactions above mentioned were closed
during the course of the previous week. “ South Pacifies” have changed hands lately at 3s. and 3s. 3d., sth call paid ; but there has been no demand for them this week. As near as can be judged, the ruling prices in this stock are—buyers, 3s. ; sellers, 3s. 6d. ; holders being satisfied to wait for a rise. There is simply no business being done in “ Southern Crosses ” at present, which may be accounted for by the fact of the next call having been raised to 3d. per share instead of Id., as This, of itself, should not deteriorate against the value of the shares in the S. C. Company, as it will enable the management to push on the necessary works for developing the objects for which the Company was formed, and we have no doubt but that the stock in this company will soon be in favor again. Landed Property. There has of late been a considerable demand from persons desirous of acquiring town and country land in this district, and owners of property have, in consequence, asked for a considerable advance on past prices. We have only one transaction of the above nature to chronicle during the present week, viz., the sale to Mr George Johnstone of the piece of land situate between the Brewery owned by that gentleman and the Albion Club Stables, having a frontage of 63 feet to Read’s Q.uay, with a depth of about a 100 feet, the price being £5OO. Money Market. There is now no limit to the money awaiting investment in the district, the only difficulty being the question of obtaining satisfactory securities. The ruling rates of interest, upon exceptionable freehold security, are, upon sums of £5OO to £lOOO 8 per cent., and upon sums ranging downwards, 9 per cent and 10 per cent, per annum.
