PORT OF POVERTY BAY. Abrivals—September. 25—Arawata, s.s., Sinclair, from Melbourne and the South, with the following passengers : Messrs. Broadhurst, Sanderson, Henderson, Tabuteau, Rowe, Williams, Gould, Smith, Davies, McDonald, Johnston, Finn, and De Lautour. 25— Oreti, s.s., Campbell, from Auckland. 26— Albion, s.s., Webster, from Sydney and Auckland. Passengers : Messrs. Diven, Teat, Cottenan, Quinlan, and two Natives. Departures—September. 25—Arawata, Sinclair, for Auckland. Passengers: Mrs George, Miss King, Mr. Smith, and three in the steerage. 25— Oreti, s.s., Campbell, for Napier. 26— Albion, sus., Webster, for the South.
The e.s. Oreti will leave this morning for Auckland, with 100 sheep for Thelwal. and Co., and 40 cattle, Read’s Trustees. The s.s. Rosina was announced to leave lastnight for the coast, with full general cargo and piping and casks for the Southern Cross Company’s works. A new fore and aft schooner, the Gisborne, built to the order of Captain Skinner, of the Minnie Hare, at Whangaroa, is now overdue, and may be expected at any hour. The s.s. Kiwi should appear in the roadstead this morning from Napier. Besides other things she brings a locomotive for Mr. Oxenham’s metal contract on the GisborneOrmond road.
The steamship Columbia foundered in Lake Michigan, and 15 persons were drowned. Messrs. Shaw, Savill & Co.’s vessel Antares, sailed from London for Auckland, on July 3th.
The New Zealand Shipping Company’s barque Loch Urr sailed from London to Auckland prior to August 15.
The New Zealand Shipping Company’s barque Stracathro, sailed from London on August 28th for Auckland. It is stated that the Union Steamship Company intend to substitute the Taiaroa for the Souther Cross in the Fiji trade after her next trip; and on the arrival of the Manipori to to put the Hero on the trade. The s.s. Oreti, Captain A. Campbell, arrived from Auckland on Sunday last. She experienced very rough weather the whole passage, with shifting E. and N.E. winds. On Sunday morning the steamer picked up the schooner Advance, flying a signal of distress ; steamed alongside and towed her to anchorage. The Oreti brings 40 tons cargo, and the following passengers Messrs. Higgins, |S. Langford, and T. Greene. The schooner advance, which used to hail from the port of Poverty Bay, was on her passage from Wanganui [?] to Tauranga, timber laden, on Sunday last, and had her sails rent by the force of the westerly gale blowing at the time, which disabled her to such an extent that she could not beat into the Bay. The s.s. Oreti hove in sight, and towed the schooner to an anchorage. The necessary repairs having been .made, the Advance proceeded on her voyage on Monday afternoon. NOTICE TO MARINERS. The following notices to mariners, which are of interest to masters of vessels trading to Wellington, appear in the Government Gazette : —“ Notice is hereby given that the Wellington Harbor Board will on and after the 22nd instant, exhibit at the outer end of the Railway Wharf, in lieu of the present temporary White Light, two Green Lights fixed horizontally 6ft. apart and 28ft. above high-water mark. They will be visible from any part of the harbor from the north side of the Queen’s Wharf round by West to Ngahauranga.
