THE TOWN CLERK.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —Can you tell me if it is true that a Committee of the whole of the Borough Council have met in secret, so to speak, and determined to request Mr. Sherriff to resign his office as Town Clerk ? If this be true, I don’t so much object to that, if there are good and sufficient reasons for it; but I do think it a most indecorous proceeding that Councillor Piesse should avowedly state at the Committee that he intended to “ run ” for the Town Clerkship, while helping with his voice, if not with his vote, to displace the present occupant; and that Messrs. Townley and Clayton should yoke themselves together to oust Mr. Sherriff and to put the former’s clerk up for the billet. Shame! Shame !! Shame ! !! —Yours, &c., Bene Exbat. [We are not in a position to give our correspondent any information on the matter. — Ed. Standabd].
