LONDON SEED TRADE

Messrs. John Shaw & Sons, of 37 Mark Lane, London, E.C., report through their agent, Mr. Leonard W. Blake, of Christchurch, that during the fortnight ending July 29, there was a little more animation shown in the market. The prospects of the new crops were exciting attention, and it would seem as though the favorable anticipations indulged in, a month or so previously, would scarcely be realized. Red clover does not promise to be anything more than an average crop in England, while recent sales of yearling seeds for export to France, indicated that the yield there will prove disappointing. White clover does not promise such a large crop as last year, the seed so far, having yielded very.badly. Alsyke will be a much smaller crop than during the past three years, the breadth being comparatively small. Trefoil is certainly a short crop of good quality. Italian and perennial rye grasses promise well. It must be borne in mind that the foregoing remarks are based upon reports from all the principal growing districts, and must only be treated as forecasts, seeing that it is impossible to speak ye't with absolute certainty. Samples of new home-grown turnip, trefoil, mustard and rape seeds were being offered. Bird seeds remained quiet, but hemp was showing an upwrrd tendency.
