NEW ZEALAND LOAN AND MERCANTILE AGENCY Co.

We observe that the Gisborne branch of this; Agency is now an accomplished fact,., the Manager —Mr. R. Hill Fisher—having recently arrived, and taken the offices adjoining; t'-e Masonic Hotel, recently occupied by Mr. W K. McLean. Lhe fact of a cojnpany haring so large a base of operations as the one to which we now drew attention, opening a branch in the town of Gisborne, is worthy of note ; and we are glad to find the sagacity of the management so amply exemplified in placing a gehtleman like Mr. Fisher in charge This gentleman till recently held an appointmant as Manager in the Bank of New Zealand which he resigned in order to take up his residence in Poverty Bay. The Tapanui Courier, in alluding to the farewell banquet tendered to Mr. Fishel, reports the C airman to have said :—They had met for the purpose of giving expression to the kindly feeling they had for the gentleman who was about to take his departure from amongst them. Mr. Fisher had many excellent qualifications. He had managed'the first banking institution in the district, and the mere fact that he had worked up such a connection proved that his business tact was equal to his social qualifications. Such gatherings as the present were often made the occasion of lauding a gentleman, and telling him he was the acme of perfection • but it was not his intention to follow that course. All that be said in praise of Mr. Fisher he meant. The number present representing important interests was sufficient to prove the estimation in which their guest was held. In parting with Mr. Fisher they were losing one of the most enterprising men of the district —one who bad always done what he could to benefit his fellows. Looked at in a social light, there was nothing in which Mr. and Mrs. Fisher had not shown a willingness to do all they could to assist. The fact of their guest being raised to so important a position as that to which he was about to proceed proved that his employers fully appreciated his business talent.” We warmly welcome Mr. Fisher to the district, and congratulate the settlers on the establishment of the Agency in Gisborne, over which he presides.
