The election of three Borough Councillors has I eventuated, with the exception of on# of the candidates, as ♦ we had forecast. We placed ; Mr. Tucker at the of the poll, with Mr. Lewis second, and Mr. Somervell third; and, ag will be seen, we are not far out in the seheetion. The placing of the candidates is a matter of minor importance to that of selec.therefore we congratulate the burgesses on' the choice' they have made. The reason we excluded Mr. Tutchen’s name from the selected triumvirate was not that we objected to him as a Councillor who had done his work well and faithfully, but that, firstly, there seemed to be a desire amongst burgesses to have an infusion of new blood in the Council, and, secondly, that he did himself considerable damage at the meeting called; by Mr. B. Cooler on the previous evening. It .wa*exceedingly bad “taste to make a .hustings cry of alleged shortcorni ng» -of the CeuneiPs officers, especially when it is borne in mind that Councillors have sat at the Board for, the past year, and remairted silent on matters which were not considered to be of such importance as to demand instant enquiry ; and to nurse them until election time came round, and then utilise them as stepping-stones to Borough honors, seems to partake of a certain amount of unfairness which adds but little to the position and dignity of a Councillor. That apart, we think the ratepayers have made a judicious selection. We should like to have seen Mr. Somervell in the Council—4n which case the whole of the candidates would have been “ new blood ” —but as the result puts him once more out in the cold, we accept .it with the same philosophy, as, probably, Mr. Somervell himself does —namely, better luck next time. We congratulate the elected candidates on their return, and, with the expression of a hope that the concentrated wisdom of the Council will be earnestly devoted to the best interests of the Borough, without local distinction or feeling, we leave them to their werk.
