The usual monthly inspection of the Battery J Volunteers and Cadets took place in the Drill-shed last Monday evening, at 7.30. Considering the counter attraction of the Pinafore opening night, there was a very good muster. After the inspection, Captain Porter informed the Corps that he was not aware until that evening that it was the wish of the members that the inspection s’puld be held on a Thursday instead of Monday, or else he would not have called the parade for Monday. In future the monthly inspection would be called for Thursday. The successful floating of the Land Company has already steadied the land market, owners being advised by their agents in consequence to hold all properties now under offer at prices in advance of those thev would have been parted for a month ago. One property mentioned to us for which £4OOO was asked, and £3,‘>oo offered, has, within the past few days, had the owner’s price offered for it; but the owner is advised to hold for £4,500, the agent expressly indicating the success of the Company as the justification for the increase demanded. Should the Company’s operations, together with those of the Oil Companies, restore our market to the sound position it once held, the district will owe much to the enterprise of those gentlem m who, in spite of so many difficulties, have hid the courage to adhere steadily, with unfl aching courage, to the development of the p "is they have projected.
