Sydney, August 22. A fresh case of small-pox is reported this morning. The sufferer is a man named E. Trevos, residing in the Haymarket. Two fresh cases of small-pox have been reported to the authorities. One is the sister of Mr. Lawse, the commission agent of Balmain. A man named Hutton, who has been confined to the quarantine station suffering from small-pox died yesterday. A commercial traveller staying at an hotel at Mudgee, placed some samples of dynamite before the fire with the view of softening them. The packages shortly afterwards exploded, and the man was blown to atoms. Calcutta, August 22nd. Intelligence is to hand from Candahar, announcing that Ayoub Khan has issued a proclamation to the people declaring himself Ameer of Afghanistan. His advance against Abdul Rahman is still further delaved, owing to a want of money with which to pay his troops and provide the necessary supplies. Paris, August 22nd. The full returns of the elections for the Chamber of Deputies show that the contest throughout the country have resulted in the defeat of the Bonapartist and Communist candidates and in the success of the moderate Republicas. Washington, August 22nd. The latest bulletin regarding President Garfield reports that his medical attendants have but faint hopes of his recovery from the relapse which recently set in.
