East Coast Land Company
From the Auckland Evening Star* we learn in connection with the above Company that a large Native meeting was held at Tologa Bay on Wednesday, August 11th. After the usual welcoming the proposed East Coast Land Company was discussed at great length, and many questions were asked of Mr. Bees at the conclusion of his address. These having been satisfactorily answered, it was resolved that the proposed dealings with the Company seemed much preferable to the ordinary sales. If the Natives sell to the Company they may, as shareholders, be participators in the profits of the future. It was further resolved that Mr. Bees be requested immediately to inform the directors that the grantees desired to make arrangements for handing over to the Company the Pareuaata, Mangahera, Panekau, and other blocks. The different speakers frequently urged on Mr. Bees the necessity of immediate operations, both because the grantees required money, and because they were pestered by Europeans trying to catch up shares, therefore, they said, “ come on with your money.” All the speakers said they were m favor of passing in their blocks to the Company, and taking out nearly all the purchase money in shares of the Company. There were frequent exclamations of “ Kapai te Kapanei,” and “ Kia Teremia Te Mone,” i.e., “Be quick with the money.” Great enthusiasm prevailed, and if the Company commences operations at once it will simply have it all its own way.
