TELEGRAMS.

(from our own correspondents). Wellington, August 19. The Post to-night says we are informed that more shares than is sufficient to float the East Coast Land and Settlement Company have already been taken up. The successful launching of this undertaking, it is believed, will mark an era in the colonisation of the North Island, and very important beneficial results from the action of the Company are looked for, as likely to accrue at no distant day. The share list closes definitely on Saturday next. (From a Correspondent) Re Waste Lands, the Government are in favor of adding Cook County to the Hawkes Bay Board giving three members for Napier, one for Wairoa, and one for Cook County. The creating of Cook County a separate district is too strongly opposed by the House to admit it passing. The proposed scheme would centralise land matters in regard to registration and surveys. Auckland, August 19. Re the Cook County Council. This was a letter from the Secretary of Lands in answer to an application to have a certain gravel pit vested in the County Council. The Government said the land could not be so vested, but that there would be no objection made to the taking of gravel therefrom. From Gisborne the local Agricultural Society applied for leave to take some timber. Leave granted.
