Borough Council.
At the fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council one or two rather important questions cropped up. The first was one raised by Captain Bennett, the wharfinger who wrote asking as to whether goods landed near Commons’ wharf were liable to the usual wharfage fee. After an animated'discussion it was resolved to wire to the Mayor, who is in Wellington in order that he might obtain legal advice as to whether the dues could be charged. W It was arranged that a conference of the Borough Council and the Cook County Council should be held in order to decide as to the opening of the Patutahi quarry. Messrs. T. W. Carr and Sons made an offer to assist in placing the hose of the fire engine in good repair, and also to contribute towards a fund for a fire brigade. The Council accepted the offer and decided to communicate with the various Insurance offices so that a brigade should be formed. ' The following telegram from the Mayor was read re the Harbor Bill: —“ Refer to Council re Harbor Bill. Something should be done at once respecting public opinion, It cannot pass with endowment clause owing to a number of other Bills of a similar character now* before the House. The Government think that they have fully considered the district in the matter, and state that they are unable to pass the endowment. Sir John Coode’s report is favorable but expensive. Wire resolution to-morrow.”
The following resolution was carried : — “ That this Council urge upon the Government the desirability of forming a harbor of refuge at Poverty Bay, as such a work, besides being of vital interest to this district, may fairly be considered a work of Colonial importance, and that the Government be requested to make provision for the construction of such work. Further, that the Government be informed that Mr. McDonald’s Harbor Board Bill, now before the House would not be acceptable to this district if the endowment clause was not retained. After the acting Engineer’s report had been read, Cr. Piesse expressed his opinion very strongly as to the work now being carried on in Gladstone Road where it is intersected by Cobden-street. The work was unsightly and interfered with the crown of the road. A considerable amount of discussion ensued in which Crs. Tutchen, Townley and Piesse principally tock part, • The other business was of minor importance.
