Borough Council.

A special meeting of the Council took place on Tuesday evening last to take into consideration the position of Mr. Oxenham’s contract, when the following letter was read : —•

Gentlemen,—l, Sydneyham Oxenham, offer to supply the gravel from Ormond river bed behind Mr. Hamon’s land in terms of my contract of 32,000 yards at the following rate. (1.) That if the tramway goes through Mr. Hamon’s land and road, the price td be 4s. 9d. per cubic yard. (2.) If the tramway goes through Mr. Higgins’ land, the price to be 4s. 6d. per yard. (3.) That the Council provide all rails and fish plates, and give delivery at the depot Gisborne. (4.) That if the line be removed at the completion of the contract the same to be done by the Council. (5 ) That the time for completion be extended if required, owing to extra distance and the hours lam not allowed to run. A schedule of prices showing how I have arrived at the rate per yard, is enclosed. I am, &c., S’. Oxhenham. Some discussion took place between Councillors, as to the probable sufficiency of supply of metal at Ripongare crossing, and eventually the following proposition was carried :— “ That, having in view the financial position of the Council, and the large increase of price per yard, the Council are unable to entertain Mr. Oxenham’s proposal to deliver metal from Mr. Hamon’s crossing, Ormond.” Mr. Oxenham was pressed for an answer, as to his intention of carrying on the contract, on original specification ; but, beyond saying that he thought the metal was to be found at Waerenga-a-hika, nothing definite was arrived at.
