The following is the result of the Colley entertainment: —Dr. to cash receipts, £43 6s. 6d. Cr. by expenses, £8 6s. Paid Dr. Trust Account Union Bank, £35 Os. 6d. Total £43 6s. fid. Too much praise cannot be awarded to Mr. F. W. Thompson for the great interest he has displayed throughout this most philanthropical work, and we congratulate him on the success he has achieved.

We beg to acknowledge, with thanks, an editorial sample of the first brew from Mr. G, Johnstone’s brewery Lowe-street. If we have a weakness (what newspaper men have not ?) it is for a pure and unalloyed drop of good beer. We profess to be judges of good beer—all our staff are in fact—therefore we record our unhesitating opinion that the sample in .is one of the best ever brewed in Gisborne. It is. beautifully clear, and has an aroma of hop, which the true connoisseur appreciated. It has a good body, and is remarkably exhilirating in its effect. In short, it is a good sound, wholesome article, and one which if kept in the market cannot fail to take up a prominent position. We congratulate Mr. R. Gibbons junr. on the success attending the first brews, for it is due to him to state what may nqt- "t|e generally known, that he is acknowledged to be' one of the best brewers in the Colony. I ■ i
