The Schoolmaster.

We have received the first number of the New Zealand Schoolmaster, published at the Hawice's Bay Herald office, Napier. The special object'of this new arrival is a higher one than the mere scraping together of pounds, shillings, and pence, like the other poor mercenary journals who can live in no other way, although the Editor says, “if petmniarv reward be in the end, our lot, we silall’not despise it.” Putting this little bit of pardonable and inexperienced modesty on one side, we congratulate one and all engaged in the issue of the Schoolmaster, on the meritorious production before us. It is full of that kind of scholastic erudition calculated to raise the question of education and its primary importance in the economy of social life, before its readers ; while there are specimens of arithmetical intricacies in its columns, that will set the student’s mind at work, possibly in a different direction to that generally emploved in schools. The periodical is cheap, only sixpence monthly ; it is exceedingly well printed, and should be in the hands of every person, whether childless or not, since it will be his fault, and not that of the Schoolmaster, if he fail to profit by its contents. We heartily wish our contemporary the success he deserves. We must not, however, be thought hypercritical if we have noticed one or two grammatical errors in the leading column, but they are quite excusable in the first oversight.
