Southern Cross Petroleum Company.

A meeting of the Directors in the above Company took place last Monday evening, When Mr. W. Clarke, Managing Director, recently returned from Melbourne, narrated the result of his visit there in the interests of the shareholders. He gave a most encouraging account of the position of affairs, with regard to the Company in the Victorian capital, and expressed his opinion that he could have placed another 15,000 shares with the greatest ease. In fact, so great was the enthusiasm over the matter, and so eager the demand for shares that, at one time,.they reached the top premium of 5s 6d. He succeeded in forming two syndicates to represent and advance tfie Company’s interests in Melbourne, and it was a matter for congratulation to find that some of the leading and most influential men there, were shareholders. Mr. Clarke had also improved the occasion by bringing over with him a gentleman of large practical experience in chemistry generally, and in the refining of oil, and paraffin in particular. It is Mr. Clarke’s object, in connection with Mr. Benies, to visit the Company’s ground, in the Rosina, which leaves for Awanui this evening. So far everything seems to favor the working of this Company’sground.
