We learn that shares in the East Coast Land and Settlement Company, are in active enquiry down south. Most encouraging accounts reach us from time to time of the progress this company is making in public favor. We direct attention to a report in another column this morning of a meetin" recently held in Wellington, to appoint permanent directors.
The first general meeting of the Shareholders in the Southern Cr oss Petroleum Company will be held in th/j Masonic Hotel on Saturday evening next., Mr. Johnstone’s first brews are going out to-day, and we are sure., from the samples we have tasted, that the Gisborne brewery will hold its own against either. Dunedin or the Thames. A public meeting is convened by Mr. A. Graham, Chairman of Cook County Council, to take place at Makaraka, evening, to take into consideration certain measures now before the House of Representatives. A match for £lO a side took place on the Waikanae beach, on Saturday morning last, between Mr. A. Gillies’ horse Carnival, and Mr. T. Greene’s horse Silvio, distance |-mile. Carnival, who was piloted by J. Brimmer, led from the jump and won hands down. Mr. Vesey Stewart, the enterprising promoter of the Bay of Plenty Special Settlements, was a passenger by the Te Anau on Sunday last from the South. He is a guest of Mr. Woodbine Johnson; and we are glad to see him in the continuance of good health and spirits. We feel compelled to draw the attention of the County authorities to the fact that the slovenly, negligent way in which the contractor is laying his rails and other plant along I the line of road will, ere long, end in disaster, and then the County Council will have to meet an action for damages. We call special attention to the entertainment to be given this evening, in McFarlane’s Hall, in aid of the wife and family of the late C. Colley. Independently of the excellence of the programme, the object for which the entertainment is to be given, should warrant us in stating that the Hall will be a full Mr. W. Clarke, the enterprising managing director of the S.C.P. Company arrived by the Te Anau on Sunday last, after an absence of about six weeks on business which, we trust, will prove beneficial to the district. We congratulate the East Coast people in having a gentleman of Mr. Clarke’s enterprising habits, resident amongst them. < An accident which was likely to be attended with fatal consequences, occurred at the new bridge on Sunday last, when a younger daughter of Mr. T. J. Dickson fell from the planking into the river. Assistance was promptly at hand, and rescued the child, and she is now recovered from the effects of the immersion. ; >
We have been requested to state that the outgoing ’Frisco mail will close on Friday next, at 3 p.m., and will be forwarded per Te Anau to Wellington fbr transhipment to the mail steamer for Manakau ; and if the Penguin, going north is up in time to catch the Mail steamer at Auckland on Tuesday, a supplementary mail will go by her, of which due notice will be given.
The Directors of the Southern Cross Petroleum Company are intent on doing their level best to promote the interests of Shareholders confided to their care, and have chartered the s.s. Rosina for a business trip to Te Awanui, when a “ visitation will be made to the Rotokautuku works. It is notified in this morning’s issue that any one requiring passage, &c., can secure tile same by applying to Messrs. Carr and Sons, or to the Manager at the Company’s offices, any time during the day. The Rosina will leave this evening.
During Mr. W. Clarke’s absence from Gisborne, he has been most industriously engaged in many ways. Amongst other things he has engaged the attention of Melbourne men towards our projected Gas Company, and has returned with assurances of success not hitherto dreamed of. Mr. Clarke has communicated, personally, with Messrs. McLean Bros., and Rigg, who have signified their willingness to supply plant and erect the necessary Works at a cost of £5,250, with a producing capacity up to a diurnal supply of 90,000 feet. Mr. Clarke has the tender in his possession, and purposes calling a meeting of Shareholders on his return from the coast in a few days.
