TELEGRAMS.
(from OUR OWN correspondents). Wellington, July 18. The Government received telegrams to-day from the Chairman of the Thames County Council, and Mayor of the Borough, praying for immediate monetary assistance ; they estimate the damage done by the floods on Saturday night, amount to £20,000; some of the storekeepers are completely ruined. Jo’n Simpson, hulkkeeper, who had charge of the engine on board the hulk Albion, when the explosion took place, Las been committed for trial for wilfully fastening down the safety valve of the boiler. The Magistrate referred to the absence of any provision in the Act, that none but qualified persons should have charge of such engines. Ah Kew, Chinaman, was fined £l5 and costs £3 10s, for attempting to smuggle 450 cigars from the steamer Bowen on Saturday. The steamer Australia, with English mails, left ’Frisco, on the 3rd July, being one day later than time table.
