PRESBYTERIAN ENTERTAINMENT.

The soiree and concert on Wednesday evening last, in MacFarlane’s Hall, brought together the largest gathering we have ever seen in Gisborne ; and the whole affair, from first to last, was very creditable to all concerned, and must have been as gratifying to the entertainers as it was satisfactory to the entertained. There were no new features in it making it differ from entertainments of its kind ; although we do not remember any occasion on which a bona fide bachelors’ tea table was set aside for the exclusive reception of those who have not yet entered the Benedictine Order. Two young unmarried ladies did the honors thereat, and most resolutely carried out the idea, by sternly refusing to supply any married lady or gentleman with refreshment, so that, for once, the young people had it all their own way. The arrangement caused some pleasant fun, accompanied by a fund of social chaff, which caused the tea to pass off very agreeably. Of the musical portion there is no need to individualize either the pieces or the performers. There was some capital singing, by both ladies and gentlemen ; and, judging from the frequent and hearty plaudits, and encores, there was abundant evidence that the audience was well pleased. Something substantial will be given to the church funds as the result ; and we fully endorse the Rev. Mr. McAra’s remarks which he made in passing a well-deserved vote of thanks to the promoters of the evening’s enjoyment.
