(from OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS:). Wellington, July 12. Whitelaw is being tried before Judge Richmond to-day. He is defended by Mr. Travers assisted by Mr. Edwards. A match is being arranged between Hearn, the New Zealand sculling champion, and Messenger, of Australia. Northern men are much chagrined at White’s defeat, on Saturday. The weather was splendid. White, at first took the lead, but soon dropped astern, evidently done up ; Hearn won easily by seven lengths. Several southern members are exercised over, the great expenditure in building and furnish' ing the new Wellington Hospital at the cost of the Colony, while the Government refused to assist other Colonial Hospitals. There is likely to b ■ a Committee of Enquiry on the matter, as it is rumored that one or two who took an active interest in furnishing had their pockets well lined over the transaction. Tuesday Evening. In Whitelaw’s case of alleged cruelty to a lunatic patient in the Asylum, the jury were locked u:i all night, and on coining into court this morning the foreman stated they were unable to come to any determination. The judge dismissed the jury, and granted a new trial, which will take place on the 21st instant.
