Football Notes.

The match Town v. Country on Saturday last proved that we possess the elements of a really first-class team, but as we have on many occasions stated there is a want of unity amongst the players, and a much too marked effort to individually attract attention, or obtain praise. Io play with any degree of success, a team must play “ together,” practice regularly, and each one should know the strength or weakness of each of his side, that he can, when hard pushed, know exactly whom

to depend on. The “ passing back ”on Saturday was a decided improvement upon that of previous play, but still requires to be more generally understood. The game resulted in a victory for the Town by two goals and three tries to nothing, but it must be understood that our country visitors played shorthanded. On the Town side Berry [the Captain] played admirably, and it would be well if some aspirants to kicking fame would endeavor to learn something from him. E. H. Pavitt, H. Cook, [a very useful player lately from Auckland] Burns and Chrisp showed up best and the latter with a little more coaching would become particularly efficient. On the side of the Country F. Arthur and E. A. Pavitt were the shining lights. Te Kani now and then would put on a spurt, but he would shortly after shut up and play lazily. Wyllie apparently did not know that he had a neck to be broken, otherwise he would not have charged head down in the manner he did. The play however taking it all round was fairly good, and proved that with more practice, we could select a team of sufficient calibre to tackle any other likely to be brought against them. On Saturday week t’ e return match of Town v. Country is to be played at Waeren-ga-a-bika, when a capital game may be confidently predicted. Preparations are being made for the reception of the Nap'er men, who will be here about the end of the month, and we are informed that it is intended to give them a dinner.
