The Cook County Council met on Friday night last. It was decided to make representations to the Waste Land Board in regard to the unsuitableness of the Whakaongaonga block for homestead settlement. The Council decided to appoint Mr Orbell, Sheep Inspector, if practicable, to act as a travelling Registrar of Dogs, and to request Mr Inspector Scully to instruct the police in the county to assist in carrying out the provisions of the Dog Registration Act. Mr Kirk’s offer to put the punt at Tologa Bay in repair, was accepted. The terms are that Mr Kirk has a monopoly of the punt, rent free, for two years ; but should the Council determine to end the arrangement sooner, it can do so by giving reasonable compensation for any losses that may have been sustained. Confirmation of by-law relative to tires in the county was postponed, pending the result of an interview between Councillors Scott, McKay, and Chambers, and the teamsters. On the motion of Councillor Porter it was agreed to write to the District Surveyor, requesting the survey of a line, through the Mangaheia Valley. The County Engineer was instructed to lay off the Waimata Road immediately on his return, and fix on sites for landing places on the Waipaoa and other rivers. Cr. Porter’s motion to hold fortnightly meetings was unanimously carried.
