BATTERY J VARIETY TROUPE.

On Monday evening next, in McFarlane’s Hall, the Battery J Variety Troupe will present a particularly attractive programme, and from the care which has been taken in its compilation, and from the names of those who are to take part, we confidently expect to see one of the largest attendances which has ever graced the building. The first part will consist of instrumental and vocal music; in which Madame Stewart will appear, and amongst her repertoire, will sing, “ Oh, say once more, I love Thee,” by special desire. Airecitation will also be given by a gentleman who has never yet appeared before a Gisborne audience. After this an original burlesque, written by Mr. F. J. Piesse, and entitled “ Bonem Securem,” will be placed on the boards for the first time. The "W piece, as is usual with burlesque is in verse, abounds with puns and witticisms and during its progress the audience will be kept in a constant roar of laughter. Some of the bon mots are really good, whilst others are of a most excruciating nature. Many well placed local hits have been introduced which no doubt will occasion much merriment. Taken as a whole the burlesque is a most creditable production, and, as the cast is a particularly strong one, embracing as it does the pick of our amateur talent, it should prove a genuine success. The musical portion of the programme will be presided over by Mrs. C. D. Berry who has kindly consented to play the incidental music and accompany the numerous songs which embellish the extravaganza. Seats may be secured on application to Messrs. Ratcliffe and Piesse, and we are assured that the members of the Battery will prevent disappointment by reserving them for their selectors. A large number of extra chairs will be provided so that ticket-holders may rest satisfied comfortable seats may be obtained. As stated before, the coming treat promises to crown all previous efforts of the clever amateurs who form the Battery J Troupe.
