Mr Onward Bates was not idle during his stay in Gisborne. He personally inspected the South Pacific Petroleum Company’s ground, and made himself so thoroughly a master of the situation that he is now able to talk, as well as think over matters. Mr Bates purposed leaving the colony by the ’Frisco boat on M< n lay last for the States, and possibly never to return to New Zealand ; nevertheless, he expressed himself very gratified at his stay ; and, although he remained behind at the pressing solicitation of his friends, and somewhat against his inclination, he was glad that he yielded. He takes with him some first-class specimens of paraffin and oil from both the Company’s grounds, and some of the wax residuum taken from the retort at Mr Wade’s shop, after the recent gas operations. If this do not confirm t !- e bona fides of our resources we do not know what will.
