CORRESPONDENCE.

[We do not hold ourselves responsible for opinions expressed by our correspondents]. [ad VERTIS e ment] . To the Editor of the Poverty Bay Herald, per Favor of the Standard. Sir, —I notice in your columns, this evening, an account of the sufferings of the passengers ex Rotomahana steamship. This account is not exaggerated, if the last one “ referring to Mr. Johnston’s narrow escape ” was. It errs on the other side, this time. For lam given to understand that the boat filled whilst taking the passengers and visitors to the Rotomahana. I had very nearly been one of the latter myself, had I not seen three clergymen embarking. The question is, how long this sort of thing is to be allowed ? The fact of calling it a lifeboat, is absurd. If it is carelessness it is criminal after the fact. If it is 1 a want of brains, in order to construct a better boat they had better advertise for some ore who has the brains. I also notice in your columns, an account of the longevity of a fellow townsman of mine, named W. Joseph Livesey. I have known him since I can recollect, as a white-haired, liver-faced, cantankerous Radical (Liberal) ; all his childrens’ hair is white at twenty’ And if people would act on the old maxim—a pint of beer is worth sixpence, two’s worth a shilling, three’s worth now't, there would be no occaasion for such hypocritical humbugs as teetotallers. Apologising for taking so much of your space, I am, &c., J. B. Dawson, 192 Cabinetmaker.
