At the Borough Council meeting on Tuesday, His Worship the Mayor carried a resolution to the effect that it is expedient to build abridge over the Turanganui River, at the foot, and in continuation of Gladstone Road, so as to connect the East Coast with other parts of the country. Capt. Porter also urged that Mr. McDonald be requested to support the prayer of a petition to the House, asking for a subsidy for that purpose ; and that the Cook Council be solicited to join the Borough in the project. At the meeting of the County Council, on Thursday evening last, there seemed to be an unanimity amongst members to act upon the Borough suggestion, and resolved to support the proposed petition to the House for a grant of public money. It is doubtful if the course of petition be the proper and most convenient form of applying for money for public purposes, unless it be sought in the shape of a favor, or as a last resource. However, probably any course is better than none at all; but where the voice of the people has to be raised on such a trifling subject, it only shows how weak and uninfluential the representative must be who requires the voices of some hundreds of persons before he can make himself heard.
