The Reported Comet.
In reference to the comet we announced on Saturday last, we quote the following from an exchange : —“ It is quite true that a comet has appeared in our sky, though apparently of a small order. Last night was not T favourable for obtaining its position very accurately, for soon after dark its locality was covered by cloud ; but about 7 p.m. it was about 20 degrees above the S.W. and W. horizon in the constellation ‘ eridances,” with an approximate position of sth Bight Ascension, and 30 degrees South declination It has a short tail of about 5 degrees in length, and a head comparatively bright and well formed. As to its identity, little can now be said, but in all probability it will turn out to be a stranger, as no comet visible to the naked eye has been reported, though several telescopic bodies have been observed during the last six months. Additional particulars can only be obtained by systematic observation.” — Yours, &c., S. J. Lambert, F.R.A.S.
