London, May 29. News is to hand from Ireland that serious riots have occurred at Mitchelstown in the County of Cork. Twelve thousand [sic] peasants assembled there to oppose the service of writs for the ejectment of some tenants, and upon the police arriving on the scene, fighting of a very severe character took place. After much bloodshed on both sides, the rioters were dispersed, and evictions of tenants were finally completed. At the wool sale to-day 8,900 bales were offered, and the tone of the auction was firm. Trickett and Kelly have started for New York. The Irish Land League is daily increasing its agitation through the country, and is showing that it will oppose any attempt to prohibit its meetings. 29th May. The Times, in a leading article yesterday, contradicts the report recently circulated that it was the intention of the British Government permanently to occupy the Choman and Pishin Valleys, after the evacuation of Candahar. It announces ihat orders have been issued for the early evacuation of the latter post. The Times further states that the Indian Government has warmly protested against the withdrawal of troops from the Afghan territory, but without influencing the determination of the Imperial Cabinet. Rumors that complications are likely to arrise between Russia and Germany, consequent upon the accession of Czar Alexander 111, are attracting attention throughout Europe. The growing coldness between the two countries is being much commented upon in diplomatic circles. Paris, May 29. Gambetta made a speech to-day, in the course of which he counselled a pacific policy, and said that order and peace were of necessity for the well being of France, and should be rigidly maintained. Calcutta, May 29. Telegrams are to hand from Candahar stating that fighting has taken place at Girisk between bodies of the followers of Ameer Abdul Rahman and Ayoub Khan. The latter is reported to be still at Herat.
