London, May 25. News has been received from Canada that a terrible accident has occurred near London-on-Thames in the province of Ontario. An excursion steamer, with several hundred persons on board capsized ; 175 perished. At the wool sales to-day, 9,100 bales were offered ; the tone of bidding was strong. Sydney, May 26. ‘A child of a Chinese merchant, resident in Lower George-street, is suffering, it is stated, from small-pox, but it is hoped that the disease may only be chicken-pox. Meanwhile every precaution is being taken to prevent the spread of the contagion. Communication with persons outside has been cut off, and the house is now guarded by the police. Adelaide, May 25. Agricultural statistics of South Australia furnished to-day, show that the area under cultivation is 1,934,000 acres, being an increase of 215,000 compared with last year; the yield during the last season has been 8,656,000 bushels, an increase of 560,000 compared with the season 1880. This year’s average has been 4 bushels 381b5., per acre, against 9 bushels 411b5., last year. Melbourne, May 25. Completed returns of census taken on April 3rd, showed a total population of the Colony of Victoria to be 946,080.
