Arrest of Midhat Pasha. Constantinople, May 18. An inquiry has been held into the confession of the four domestics of Schefazin Palace that were concerned in the murder of the Sultan, Abdul Aziz, in 1876. Evidence was adduced that led to the accusation of Midhat Pasha (who was Grand Vizier at the time of the Sultan s death) of complicity in the crime. An Imperial decree has accordingly been issued deposing Midhat Pasha from the position he occupied as Governor of Smyrna, and ordering his immediate arrest. Midhat Pasha has taken refuge in the French Consulate, and has appealed to the French and other foreign Consuls for protection from arrest by Turkish authorities. London, May 19. Telegrams have been received by the Government from Smyrna to the effect that Midhat Pasha was arrested to-day, the French and other Consuls having refused to afford him an asylum from the Otoman Ministers of J ustice. St. Petersburg, May 19. General Ignatieff, who was recently appointed Minister of Interior has issued a circular with reference to the intentions of his mperial Majesty, the Czar, in connection with the present internal condition of Russia, lhe circular states that every effort will be made to extirpate the spirit of rebellion among the people, to strengthen the religious faith and morals of the peasantry, and lesson their burdens. The aristocracy generally extol the terms of General Ignatieff’s circular.
