Cook County Council.

At the meeting of the Council on Friday evening last, a good deal of business was got through. With regard to the proposed accommodation houses on the Wairoa and Motu roads there was a long discussion, and it was ultimately resolved, on the proposition of Cr. Johnson, seconded Reeves, that a Committee be ajmointed, consisting of Crs. Graham, Porter, and McKay, to frame conditions of occupation, and to call for applications from persons desirous of becoming licensees. With regard to setting aside lands in the Whakaongonga and Arihiki blocks, it was decided that the selections should be made by the County Engineer, and one of the Councillors. The tramway question occupied some time discussing, eventually it was proposed by Cr. Chambers that the hours from 10.30 to 11.30 a.m., and 3.30 to p.m., be fixed for the stoppage of train if found necessary. Seconded by Cr. Sunderland and carried. It was also decided to put up distinctive danger flags to indicate the approach of the engine. The quantity of gravel fixed by the Council was 12,(MX) yards, to be delivered from time to time as required by the Engineer. The Council decided to entrust the member for the East Coast with the introduction of the Waipaoa River Bill to the House ; and also with the obtaining of a grant of money for the Gisborne coach road. The Engineer handed in his reports on the Gisborne-cum-Wairoa, and East Coast roads, the principal items of which are: To widen the former, via Te Reinga, into a coach road, to 12 feet. The total length of line required to be widened'is about 10 miles, passing through the Patutahi, Whakaongaonga, and Waihou blocks, all of which are through Crown lands ard a uitable for settlement. To clear away the bush which the track passes to three-quarters of a chain on either side, and erecting good culverts and bridges. There will required two bridges of 70ft., twY? of 50ft., one of 30ft.. four of 25ft., three of 20ft., and about fifty culverts from ten to fifteen feet span. There will be about three miles of new road to form owing to the present grade being too steep for a coach road, and the total cost is estimated at from £(5000 to £6.soo.—The road between Gisborne and Waiapu is reported to be good, but between the Waiapu river and Hick’s Bay the track is in a verv bad state of repair. The removal of the site of the Waiapu ferry to Wai-o inatatini is not recommended for the fol lowing substantial reasons: — (1). That the site of the ferry is little or no better than the present one. (2). That it will increase the length of road by about 5 miles. (3). That if the track was made it would not be used by any of the ratepayers once in the year. A. recommendation to spend about £2OO on the Reinga road at once, was not entertained ; but an expenditure of £lO was authorised for the Karawa bridge. Relative to refund to Mr. H. Trimmer for expenses incurred whilst attending the late G. Mulloy, it was decided to refer the tnatter to the GilC’ernment ; Councillors generally concurring that Mr. Trimmer should be repaid. Notice was given of the termination of the services of Mr. A. Y. Ross. After it was decided that the collection of the dog tax was a failure, it was resolved to communicate with the police in reference to laying informations against offenders. The Council refused to entertain the Auditor’s suggestion relative to a refund of £3O to the cemetery authorities. The annual accounts and balancesheet for the year were authorised to be
