A dance under the auspices of the J Battery is to be held on Saturday evening, the 16th inst., at Makaraka. A meeting of creditors in A. F. Lewis, the ever popopular importer, announces that he has received an entirely new stock of goods. As he himself says his thorough business knowledge is a guarantee that he buys the best of material. Host Dickson of the Argyll, after trying peculiar carrots, eccentric potatoes, a marvel of nature in the shape of a tomato, to say nothing of Ichneumons, chickens suckled by cats, and such like, has at last secured one of the most wonderful curiosities ever seen—that being, as he terms it, “ The Boy in the Boat.” This interesting youth is expected into port on Monday next. By the last trip of the Rosina to Awanui the men engaged by the contractors proceeded on their way to the oil springs at Rotokautuku. Stores were also shipped, as well as a strong bullock, dray (the first to be in the district), and water tanks for engine and houses. The timber contracts are now wholly completed. We understand the Managing Director, Mr Clarke will leave by the next trip of the Rosina in order to superintend the road making in the several directions necessary for conveyance of timber and goods. Probably some of our local people will take the opportunity of visiting the ground. Every effort is being used to enable the drilling of the first well to commence next month.
