The battle of the wharves concluded at a special meeting of the Borough Council , on Tuesday evening last. The Government will hold the rights of the foreshore in their own hands, and plainly intimate that all who build thereon, without express sanction, will be treated as trespassers. The Rowing Club jetty, the Council decided to recommend should be sanctioned, as it appears it was erected, under certain permission given by the Harbor Master. A motion was carried, on the casting vote of the Mayor, that Messrs. Kennedy and Bennett retain the use of their wharf for the purpose of a depdt for the supply of coals for the use of steamers only; but wharfage to be paid on all coals used in ordinary sale, for any other purpose. An amendment was attempted to impose wharfage on the coals landed there, on the ground that the present public wharf was sufficient for all requirements.
Mr. Common urged that he should be allowed to land and ship goods from his wharf free of charge; but the Council did not recognise it in the light set forth, and, ultimately resolved on the motion of Cr. Ward, “ That “ the Borough Council recommend “ that Wm. Common & Co., be allowed “ the use of the premises at present “ occupied by them and other erections “ for the receiving, storage and ship“ping of goods subject to all wharf “ dues being' paid in like manner as “ landed or shipped from the Gisborne “ Borough Wharf.”
