Shipping Intelligence.
:u: PORT OF POVERTY BAY. ENGLISH SHIPPING INTELLIGENCE FOR THE ’FRISCO MAIL. [Specially Collated for the “ Poverty Bay Standard.”] London, January 27th, 1881. Shipping during the last month has been unusually slack, in fact such a quiet season has not been known for a number of years. This is in a great measure accounted for by the very severe weather which we have lately experienced, rendering navigation in the river impossible. During the last ten days all the vessels in the docks have been completely icebound, and consequently unable to proceed with their loading, numbers of lighters with their cargoes have been sunk through coming into collision with ice in the river, and s. veral steamers have had to put back from the same cause. A thaw has, however, set in to-day (January 27th), and we may now hope that shipping may shortly resume its usual activity. The s.s. Norfolk, owned by Messrs. Money, Wigram and Sons, and loaded bv Shaw, Savill and Co., was to have left for Lyttelton and Wellington on the 20th instant, but being completely icebound in dock will not leave before to-morrow. She carries 181 passengers all told, but the majority of these as well as a large portion of her cargo, are for Sydney. She will be followed by the s.s Durham, also loaded by Messrs. Shaw, Savill and Co., on March 10th, for Lyttelton only. The vessels at present on the berth for Auckland, are the Avona (N.Z.S. Co.), to leave on 31st instant, and the Coronilla (S.S. and Co.), on or about February sth. The former of these vessels will have twelve steerage passengers, while the Coronilla is taking cargo only. The Merope will be despatched for Auckland on March 4th, taking Mr. Fitzgibbon Louche’s Special Party to the Colony. We have had lately more enquiries from intending passengers for April and May than we have yot known, and, therefore anticipate doing a large passenger business during those months with farmers of good class, with large families, and capital.
