A ROMANTIC KING.

The present King of Bavaria is quite a romantic person. Of course he is handsome and accomplished —all royalties are when living ; it is only after death that history dare to hint otherwise. King Ludwig is also credited with “ rare intelligence,” but this is somewhat contradicted by his morbid love of solitude and distaste for society His capital knows him not. He holds no Court. He owns a number of castles which seem to differ from each other in being more retired. At these prisons he stays seldom more than a week, and al wavs travels in the dead

of night, being as much afraid as our own gracious Majesty that the sight of the Royal countenance is too radient for mortal eyes to bear. It is said Ludwig passes his time in the practice of music and painting, and it may be, also writes poetry. Popular report is that he never sleeps. Some people would say that a monarch who acts in this way has too little rather than too much mind, but perhaps Bavaria has cause for thankfulness that her king is the reverse of active. Of course, he takes sufficient interest in the outside world to draw his pay.
