Makaraka Hall.
Last night Mr. Caulton gave an entertainment in his Hall at Makaraka, consisting of a musical melange, in which our prominent local amateurs took part, and a variety performance by the talented Thornton Dot Troupe; the whole concluding with a ball. We’ need hardly say that there was an immense crowd present on the occasion, and everybody being holiday bent, it was a good hit to so appropriately wind-up the day. Mr. Thornton and family played in “ The Soldier of Fortune,” and “ How to Settle Accounts,” which caused some great amusement. The musical portion of the programme, was sustained by Madame Stewart and Miss Vandy, and Messrs. Ratcliffe, Scott, Sceats’ and others, in their usual style, and were greeted with vociferous- plaudits at the end of each song. Dancing was kept up with great vigor until the small hours this morning. Great credit is due to Mr. Thornton for the new scenery he has lately embellished the Hall with ; the whole of which was much appreciated and admired.
Mr. Flood presided at the piano during the evening with his accustomed ability.
