OBottlecX ! - IL* 9 rBREWED FROM THE CRYSTAL (?) WATERS OF THE LEITH. AVING heard statements by several late residents in Dunedin that the “ CRYSTAL WATERS OF THE LEITH ” were CONTAMINATED WITH DRAINAGE FROM TANNERIES, FELLMONGERIES, $ SEWAGE, I asked for, and received the following LETTER from MR. TURTON, Barrister and Solicitor, lately arrived here from Dunedin, which lie kindly permits me to publish. W. F. CRAWFORD. Gisborne, 25th January, 1881. W. F. Crawford, Esq., Dear Sir, —The water of Leith (Dunedin), I know to be Impure and Impregnated with Filthy and Diseased Ingredients. I was for a long time the Secretary of the Acclimatisation Society, and during that period the Society liberated TROUT in this stream, and I well know the EVIL EFFECT which resulted—the FISH BECAME DISEASED through the IMPURITY OF THE WATER. THE WATER OF LEITH IS SO IMPURE that it is NOT FIT for Domestic purposes, and very many Dunedin friends who have seen THE REFUSE usually thrown into it, will • corroborate this statewent. Yours very truly, GIBSON K. TURTON. ♦ [“The Crystal Waters of i Z~NOME all you heads of families ! You invalides and such, Come listen to my simple tale ! ’Twill please you very much, Come Members of the Faculty, Come patients, friends, and all ! I have a cure for your complaints, Though you’re not ill at all. On sweet Dunedin’s silent breast, A “ crystal” river flows, Receiving summer’s sunshine, And bitter winter’s snows. And the rain falls in this river And swells its flowing tide ; The oldest of the settlers gaze Upon it with much pride. Now you invalides who battle With fell diseases mind, That what I’m going to offer you Is meat and drink combined. This river laves a gory yard Of butchery and slaughters ; They term the blending of the two The meat-ing of the waters. This crystal stream is flavor’d by A “ Boiling-down ” dr two With essence of fellmongery, Before its used to brew, And sewage tonic flows on top, With sheep-dip underneath. A river made up of sweet smells This crystal stream of Leith. A man may drink this stuff and live; I’m quite convinced’ I can’t.; The beer is only fit to feed’ Someone’s “ white elephant.” 928 W MAD HARE.
