Melbourne Yacht Race.
The following particulars of the race, across the water, in which the Auckland boat Taniwha engaged, will be read with interest:— The Stakt. The weather to-day is splendid, with a light easterly wind, which is freshening. The yachts got away to a capital start. In passing the light-ship the Edith was first, followed by the Janet and May Queen. The Auckland yacht, Taniwha, being close up, and in a good, position. May Holland, the well-known waterman of Sandridge, sails the Taniwha. Second Message. The following was the result of the first time round the course, 15 miles : Janet ... ... 2 hr. 50 min. Secret ... ... 2 hr. 55 min. Edith ... 2 hr. 55 min. 15 sec. Taniwha 2 hr. 57 min. The Zephyr and May Queen followed. The breeze is freshening. Third Message. There was no material change in the positions of the boats on the second run round the course. The Janet still held first place, with the Secret second, Edith third and Taiwdia fourth. The three last-named boats, had, however, worked up considerably closer to the Janet.
Fourth Message. In going'rdund the third time, the Taniwha passed the Edith and took third place. She then gained rapidly on the other boats, and in working on the starboard tack went to windward of the Secret. She now had second place, the Janet being the only vessel ahead of her.
The race now became very exciting. The Secret held the third place well against the Edith. The remainder of the course was too short to give the Taniwha any chance of beating the Janet, but she gained rapidly on that boat when close hauled. The Result. The Janet eventually passed the flagship two minutes and thirty seconds ahead of the Taniwha. The Secret had third position at the finish, but the Taniwha has to allow her time allowance. The Secret, therefore, takes second prize. Reuter’s Cablegram. The Champion Challenge Yacht Race resulted: — Janet (Melbourne) 1 Secret (Auckland built) ... 2 Taniwha (Auckland Yacht Club) 3
