Our Ormond readers will notice that the Rev. J. McAra conducts service in the schooiroom Sabbath at 11 a.m. At the Wairoa races to be held on the 13th inst., Poveoty Bay will be well represented, no less than seven horses from this district, entered for the different events, and it is confidently stated by the “ knowing ” ones that the “ big event ” will fall to a Poverty Bay horse. The ordinary meeting of the Gisborue School Committee took place on Wednesday evening last, but no business of any public import was transacted. The annual election of a school committee will take place on the 24th inst., when it is expected that all the present members will seek re-election. A Native named Hohepa Putarone, was arrested by Constable Shaw of the Wairoa, on Thursday last, at the Mahia, on suspicion of forging an endorsement on a deposit receipt, drawn in favor of Hohepa Ngapa. The Constable, with his prisoner, arrived in town yesterday, and the Native will appear at the R.M.’s Court this morning.
