RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT, GISBORNE.
[Before M. Price, Esq., R.M., and Parau,J.P.]
Wednesday, Jan. 5, 1881. DESTITUTE PERSONS ACT. Robert Houlden was charged on a summons from Auckland with refusing to contribute to his mother’s support. The defendant stated that he was a married man, with a family of six children, and that he was unable to contribute anything ; he had been out of work lately, and it was impossible for him to allow the complainant any money. His Worship said he would adjourn the case for the purpose of looking over the Act.
On the case being called on Thursday morning the defendant said he was unable to make any allowance, and his Worship committed him to the Auckland Police Court. Friday January 7th. POLLEN V. PHILLIPS. Claim £3 13s 6d for medical attendance. Judgment was given for the plaintiff for £3 3s and costs. COMBS & CO., y, DOWNS. Claim £4 Is 4d. The case was adjourned on the application of Mr. Cantie, manager for the plaintiff’s to enable him to communicate with his employers in Napier, and get power to sue. Mr. Cantie handed to the Bench an authority from Combs & Co., authorising him to take legal proceedings for the recovery of all outstanding accounts, but his Worship informed him that it was not worth the paper it was written on, and said he would have to show a power of attorney as an authority to sue upon.
