IN MEMORIAM. JOHN EDWIN BUTT, Member Loyal Gisbobnx Lodge, No. 6087, I 0.0. F., M.U., A.D. Died Dec. 19,1876. Aged 34 tears. “ We shall meet, but we shall miss him; There will be one vacant chair." Yes! We shall miss him when the Brethren meet With Fbiendship, Lovb, nnd Truth, each ’ one to greet ; His mahly form ah I never, never more The vacant chair will fill now as of yore. Yes! Stilled for ever is the hearty voice, Whose tones have often caused us to rejoice ; And closed fn death the eye, and pale the cheek— In vain now shall we for his presence seek. The Great Grand Master, Lord of all, decreed The spirit from the body should be freed ; And, mould’ring into dust, the inorlal lies. While soars the soul to realms beyond the ■kies. In Faith we leave him to his Maker’s love ; Hops casts it’s ray to blissful scenes above ; In Charity let us no faults relate, But all his many virtues emulate. Though gone from this our earthly Lodge, as all— For man conies like a flow’r, like grass must fatl— By the grim King of Shades will summoned be, He finds a loving place in Memory. And still we trust, as each departs, to greet Our missing Brother, and again to meet, When we in turn are laid beneath the sod, In that Grand Lodge, whoso Ruler is our God. F.J.P. Gisborne, Dec, 24, 1876.
A correspondent writes thus to the Napier Telegraph fromPetane. He makes some indignant remarks at the notion that the Northern settlers should be asked to contribute to a memorial to the late Superintendent. He asks “ What has Mr Ormond done for us P Must we point to our roads, or our bridges, or to the energy shewn by him in getting for us the long promised Spit Bridge ? No doubt the Southern settlers benefited largely by his administration, and might present him with a gold medal, while we of the North might give one of a more flexible but not quite .-c ■ ostly a material."
