Mr Stewart, Messrs Ross, Pike, Fagin, and Jobson. The Jane Douglas left for Auckland yesterday morning. The Go-a-hend is advertised for Auckland this evening. We are authorised to state that it .is not contemplated to take the Jane Douglas out of the Auckland trade, at present. The Rangatira left Napier yesterday aftornoon, and should arrive in the bay early this morning. She proceeds south again about noon. The P.M.S.S., City of New York, from New Zealand, arrived at Kaudavau on the 24th ultimo, at 9.30 a.m., and left again for San Francisco at 2.15 p.ra. We regret to learn from Dunedin of the total wreck of the splendid mail steamer Otago at Chasland’s Mistake, when on her way from Port Chalmers to Melbourne via the Bluff. The Otago enme out to the colonies (in 1863 or 1864) as one of the Panama and Australian line of steam packets. The Agent-General, under date 22nd November, telegraphs that he has despatched the Leicester, with 340 emigrants for Wellington; Marlborough, with 239,. for Otago; and Waipa and Weltherse, with 560 for Canterbury. Also that the Hurunui, which put into Weymouth on account of an outbreak of scarlet fe v er, has finally sailed for Wellington.

That the Christmas holidays arc approaching will be seen by the fact that the Union Steamship Company are advertising return tickets to and from any port called at by their splendid steamers, as available from the 15th December to the 28th February. Besides the extension of time, a noteworthy feature of the notification is that a deduction of 30 per cent will bo made on the double fare.

We learn that “ a very graceful compliment has been paid by the Government to Captain Fairchild for the services he rendered in recovering the broken ends of the Cook Straits Cable. Having refused any remuneration for this service himself, the Governnfrnt have recently presented to Mrs Fairchild a handsome set of diamond earrings and locket to match, accompanied by a congratulatory letter to the Captain. Captain Johnston, who assisted Captain Fairchild in the recovery of the cajile, has also been presented with a purse of fifty sovereigns.” We should like to know who paid for the “graceful compliment;” and what amount of magnanimity there was in the refusal of.“ any remuneration " by Captain Fairchild for work done in the performance of a duty for which he is already well paid ? ’
