PORT OF POVERTY BAY. DEPARTURES. NOVEMBER. 18— Jane Douglas, s.s., Captain Fraser, for Napier. Passengers — Messrs Hamlin, Harker, Mrs Pratt arid two children, and Miss Glazebrook. The Go-a-bead steamed from Auckland for Gisb rue ou Monday evening last. The Jane Douglas left Napier last evening for this port, and is on the berth for Auckland, leaving to-morrow. The Eangatira left Wellington last night, and will arrive here on Thursday morning, leaving again for the south in tiie afternoon. The Fiji Argus says :■ —“ The subsidy to the '* S'ar of the South ” has been increased from£3o) to £4OO per month. Though it seems a large sum, ai £3OO per month subsidy, and her other receipts, the “ Star ” was not more than paying expenses. The subsidy is renewed for two mouths from Ist October.” A ehart says the Southern Cross has lately been fixed in the long-room, Cus-tom-house, showing the correct daily readings of the baiometer, for the information of mariners. The rise and fall of the barometer is carefully noted each day by Mr Brewer, the sub-collector, who maps out the same on the chart. The readings are taken from the Insurance Company’s barometer, fixed 30ft. above the sea level. It will be found very beneficial to masters of vessels requiring the information.
