It would appear says the New Zealand Herald that the praiseworthy efforts put forth by Sergeant Armstrong, of Awanui for the discovery of the natives who set fire to Mr Walker’s premises at Awanui, upwards of two months, ago, are to be frustrated by the Native Department, whose mysterious proceedings no one can fathom. It would appear from what has lately transpired at that part of the East Coast, that in the event of the incendiar* ies being discovered—of which there is no doubt—the Government will not sanction their being prosecuted, on the ground that were such a course pursued, a native disturbance would be created, as had been the case in April last, when Mr Walker's cattle had been illegally taken possession of and sold by natives, whose conduct in the matter was extremely reprehensible. The inference, therefore, is that the incendiaries will not be brought to even ifthe evidenceasto their guilt sliouhflj be ever so strong: unless, indeed Walker insists upon prosecuting them, which it is to be hoped he will, and thus spurn any offer of compromise of the felony that may be made to him.
