West Coast papers state that Mr Charles Verner, of the “ Variety Troupe," levanted from Hokitika by the Ringarooma, leaving his employes and 4 others in the lurch. An eminent New York physician attri butes much of the prevalence of diptberia to the common practice of turning down the wicks of kerosine oil lamps until thev emit a strong smell of oil.
